Happy July, precious friend,
I hope your summer is treating you well so far.
Personally, I’ve been feeling the need to draw back, to shield myself from the elements of this season. Summer is associated with heat, with being seen, and with being exposed comes risks of being burned, both figuratively and literally.
As someone who has struggled with social anxiety, this season is always challenging for me. As I continue to heal the varying layers of my fear, the increase of social activity during Summer is tempting to me, but I have to honor my limits and be privy to my mental and emotional capacity for socializing.
But just because we’re scared, doesn’t mean we don’t do the scary thing. One way that I am taking my practice off of the mat right now is through continuing to show up in the various ways I am asked to, even if I fumble, even if I’m awkward.
Discomfort is a pre-requisite for growth, and my yoga practice has taught me that just showing up is progress. If we never did anything that challenged us, if we never risked failure, we would never grow.
The tricky part is not pushing and forcing - in Summer, the energies are already “running hot”. The same way we wouldn’t push the engine of an overheating car, we must not push ourselves too hard. We must also practice appreciation for where we are currently, as we continue to show up and inevitably create the growth and healing that we seek.
